The second "benefit" suggests a group selection rather than individual selection
as well.  Whilst there may be a benefit to the population of reduced competition
at the breeding site, the benefit to the individual is not clear - perhaps the
individuals also benefit by staying in an area where comeption from conspecifics
would be reduced during that first year.
