Sounded like a Barn Owl to me - see the first "Life of Birds"
episode for film of them flying during the day in the UK.

Most barn owl records from Bayside (SE Melbourne) are April to
July, with birds occasionally flying when flushed by people
(inc. birdos) or other birds.

But the most recent from nearby was 6 September last year when
one was cornered by 2 ravens at the sliding glass entrance doors
on the top level of the Southland shopping centre. The owl
almost flew in but managed to get away (thanks John Douglas for
that record).
