The following is a request for informtion about birds and/or invertebrates
found in new plantings near orchards from Donna Windsor, who is part of a
different email group and now employed by Greening Australia.
If you could send your responses to me, I will collate them and forward the
summary to Donna and to the rest of the group.

The query:
>I have had several queries about the suitability of revegetating areas with
>>local native species near orchards or in orchard districts. One big
concern
>>has been the planting of wattles which may attract borers into the
>>orchard and attracting birds that damage fruit crops. Can anyone provide
>>evidence for or against this in terms of attracting birds or insects that
>>may potentially damage fruit. If so, are certain species more damaging
than
>>others and what should we do if anything to deter them (add or omit
certain
>>types of plants, increase the size of the revegetation site etc)? What
>birds
>>or insects are likely to be beneficial in orchards? Are there any other
>>arguments such as providing spray barriers, reducing wind damage etc?
>>Look foward to some feedback about this issue, Cheers,
>>
