Hi all,
The last record of the nominate form of the Grey-crowned Babbler in
the South-East of S.A. was in December 1980. Myself, Rob Kernot, Graham
Carpenter and Roger Jaensch heard a single bird calling in scrub on the
southern boundary of Bangham C.P. We failed to locate the bird and there
have been no records since. Prior to this Cathy Houston observed two birds
3km's south of Bangham C.P. in 1979-80 and single birds were sighted near
Millicent and Rendelsham in 1972-73. Historically the species ranged right
through the south-east of the state as far as the Coorong and a specimen was
even collected in the Southern Mt Lofty Ranges in 1887. Not listed as
extinct in S.A. yet (50 year rule) but to be truthful nobody has tried to
specifically search for it. Hope this clarifies the situation in S.A. for
those that are interested
