My most amusing encounter with non-birders whilst birding was back in in 80s
in Britain. I was on the south coast in autumn and spotted a Wryneck
(uncommon passage migrant, definitely a bird you want to take a good look at
when you see one). I was watching it moving about in a gorse bush and from
behind me I could hear a constant commentary from some picnickers along the
lines of: "What's he looking at, he's very interested in something, is it in
that bush, is it a bird ...&c &c". I didn't turn for some time becuase I was
too busy watching the Wryneck, but after about five minutes I did turn only
to find that the people had completely vanished, packing up their picnic and
disappering so quickly that I couldn't even guess which direction they'd
gone in.
