Hi everybody,
We're over here visiting from England and thought everyone would like to
hear of some of the good birding we've had in
NE Queensland. This follows on from the posting from Phil Gregory of 14
April which listed some of Carole and my
birds at Cassowary House (and a visit to Mount Lewis). This was so good
that we decided to spend another morning on
the mountain, staying at Kingfisher Park (excellent! Included Lesser
Sooty Owl, Noisy Pitta, Pied Monarch and
a family group of Red-necked Crakes which now come up to the park's
office!)
Carol Iles from Kingfisher Park accompanied us to the mountain - how
about the following (+ more) in less than three
hours:
Chestnut-breasted Cuckoo - found by distinct whistle/trill calls - two
birds seen feeding on caterpillars
White-throated Treecreeper - the form called Little Treecreeper (split
in the future?)
Fernwren - heard singing close to the main track
Atherton Scrubwrens - a number seen
Yellow-breasted Boatbill - female/immature
Pale Yellow Robin
Grey-headed Robin
Chowchilla - marvellous song from a group of birds
Victoria's Riflebird - raucous calls coming from various parts of the
rainforest - a single bird flew past Carol's head
Spotted Catbird
Tooth-billed Bowerbird - three in total. Feeding on berries but
generally quiet at the moment
Golden Bowerbird - this fabulous bird did come to a bower known by
Carol. Maybe not expected to do so at this time
of the year(?) Very inquisitive, and flew to check us out, perching
literally four feet above our heads!
Satin Bowerbird - a group of more than fourteen moving to fruiting
trees. Only one male though, the rest 'green' birds
Blue-faced Parrot-Finch - a single in Lantana and field grasses.
Different site to our previous visit
Russet-tailed Thrush - after seeing Bassian Thrush with Phil this bird
showed the clear white outers in the tail, so
both are on the mountain.
Also, mustn't forget the Platypus that we found on a pool at some 900
metres!
