Hi birders,
The SIPO (South Island Pied Oystercatcher) was
easily viewed today between 1.30 - 2.15 pm in the vicinity of Woody Point, on
either side of the jetty. Although it spent much of the time resting, it was
easily picked out among some 15 OZPOs by virtue of its smaller size. The
extremely long bill, small head, short legs and peculiar stance are also very
apparent.
The flock was later disturbed by encroaching
children, and rather than flying west to Pelican Park, instead the birds rounded
Woody Point and flew north to a rock platform south of Redcliffe Point, at the
top of Margate Pde (map reference 2C, f 7, UBD Brisbane Street
Directory).
This is a particularly accessible bird and should
be easily visible to interested birders for as long as it chooses to remain in
the area.
