Hi there birders,
We usually have four or five magpies on our 5 acre block near Murray Bridge
(80km SE of Adelaide). There are three families whose territories overlap on our
block. This makes for interesting battles as the time for breeding
approaches.
Over recent days however, there has been a large group of Magpies around
the house and the open paddock over the road. Yesterday I counted 23 of them, a
far greater number than ever before. There is a great deal of carolling and
flying around and chasing one another. Is this the start of the territory wars
which happen every year as they sort out their patch ready for breeding?
We also have large numbers of Little Ravens around at present. It is not
unusual to have 30 or 40 fly over in loose flocks.
