hi Folks,
3 Little Bitterns at Cairns Croc farm today April 11, a female,
a very streaky immature and one other that I didn't see long enough to
categorize- all were on pond # 10 on the map handout, amongst large stands
of ferns and a a few rushes, not in the main big reed bed where I usually
see them. Also a great adult Black Bittern that posed for ages with
one leg lowered down a bank beside the pond, 3 White-browed Crakes,
a total of 5 Crimson Finches including one picking up a white downy
feather, a male Little Bronze-Cuckoo, a single Latham's Snipe,
Brown-backed Honeyeaters and a male Leaden Flycatcher ( unusual
here). Well worth a look if you in the Cairns area.
Three rather late Pied Imperial-Pigeons in Centenary Park, Cairns
April 11, where they've been feeding on some red palm fruits and will no
doubt move on when this food source is gone. The Pigeons seem to have gone
rather early this year, the bulk shifting out in mid-to late March. Still
a few Metallic Starlings about too.
Rufous Fantails appeared back around Cassowary House, Kuranda
on April 8, the first of the whistled Bronze-Cuckoo calling type Cicadabirds
were on April 11, with 2 seen on April 10 by other birders at Kuranda.
