Just got back from an unsuccessful trip with Judie Peet to see a pratincole
just outside Dubbo.
A work colleague saw the bird about 10 km west of Dubbo this morning while
riding to work. While Judie and I couldn't locate the bird cross
examination of the observer revealed that the bird was initially seen flying
from a roadside fence post and then standing in a ploughed paddock. The
square tail in flight was clearly recalled by the observer thus making the
bird an Australian Pratincole.
While Dubbo is close to the eastern limit of this birds normal range, Judy
Peet can recall no records of pratincoles around Dubbo.
Perhaps Alan Morris can shed some light on this.
