Hi Birdo's

Is there a recognised list of bird threats and processes that affect Australian birds? My twin grandchildren asked for a list, they are doing a bird conservation project at their school so we sat down and made a list in the order of importance as we recognised them to be.

We quickly realised there are many problems that affect one group of birds and and not another, e.g. natural vegetation clearing does not affect many migratory waders.

Many of the problems that we listed have been discussed on birding-aus. Our list so far, not entirely in order of importance is;

  Natural vegetation land clearing
  Swamp reclamation
  Mangrove reclamation
Overseas habitat destruction affecting our migratory bird feeding, sheltering and nesting habitat
Controlled burning particularly during nesting season
  Road Kills
  Predation from cats and foxes
  Duck Shooting
Agricultural and Horticultural bird pest destruction
 Habitat destruction form overgrazing
Other feral predators such as rats and mice
Outback artesian bore drain and swamp destruction from capping bores
 Toxic tailing dams at mines
Collision with overhead power lines near wetlands
 Long line fishing
Feral animal competitors (e.g. rabbits graze food and protective cover)
 Cannon netting and bird-banding
Out of balance native predators (silver gulls)
Out of balance native competitors (food and nesting sites)
Human disturbance at nesting colonies and sites
 Bird skin collecting
 Egg collecting
 Trapping for aviculture
 Accidental agricultural poisoning
 Artificial water level management
 Electrocution from power lines
Eradication of food source (e.g. Calici virus remove rabbits)

What other bird destructive threats have we missed? Any discussion on the list so far?
