Exterior grade ply is just as good as marine and cheaper. Marine ply uses selected veneers to make the face look good when it is beautifully varnished. But I remember the local - may even have been National - Mirror champion's boat. Joseph' coat wasn't in it; he used any paint that was around. Then rubbed it SMOOTH! Don't think the birds would really worry.
