G'day all and especially Birds Australia VigGroup members.

I'm organising the June long weekend campout this year. It is to be
from Friday 8th to Monday 11th June at Pritchard's Landing in Lower
Glenelg National Park (far south-western Victoria). More information in
the newsletter coming out soon and hopefully on the VicGroup website
soon.

I took a day off work today and checked out a few possible birding spots
within easy reach of the camp site. The main areas I visited were the
Glenelg River estuary at Nelson and Lake Monibeong in Discovery Bay
Coastal Park.

First stop was the river just behind the Nelson store and I was greeted
by an Azure Kingfisher diving for fish from the boatshed platforms.
Across the river was a Nankeen Night Heron in a dead tree. Blue-winged
Parrots were flying around and a Caspian Tern went past heading
upstream.

There is a nature trail with board walks and a hide on the island in the
estuary. More Blue-winged Parrots plus Southern Emu-wrens, Forest
Ravens and Singing Honeyeaters. On the estuary was a large variety of
waterbirds including Great and Little Egrets, Greenshanks, Pied
Oystercatchers, Royal Spoonbills, Chestnut Teal, Musk Ducks and
Hoary-headed Grebes. A few White-throated Needletails flew overhead
(heading west).

Lake Monibeong is a small lake behind the dunes along Discovery Bay. I
didn't have time to explore the lake but it held a few Chestnut Teal,
Musk Ducks and Black Swans. A walk along the nearby beach produced
Striated Fieldwrens, Black-faced Cormorants, a Brown Goshawk a Richard's
Pipit and three dead Little Penguins. A Rufous Bristlebird called
loudly from the dune scrub. A pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles over the
nearby pine forest and an emu with about 10 well-grown young completed
the visit.

Put the dates in your diary and (weather permitting) I guarantee you
good birding.

Cheers

Steve Clark
