While on this subject, though it is very
peripheral to birds of Australia. Is there control of cats in Italy? I have
received the impression that cats are in great abundance as ferals in the cities
and probably the rural areas as well. Not that I have ever been to
Italy!

people and birds
Several million songbirds are
trapped or shot each year in Italy (mainly southern Italy I understand),
and I believe that most are eaten, not because people are desperate for
meat, but because they prefer the taste and texture of songbirds to duck
and chicken. I'm told there was a similar problem with Italian
fishermen working estuaries in the Top Endsome years ago in that they
went in for trapping and shooting songbirds that then ended up in
spaghetti bolognaise. Apparently Yellow Chat was a
favourite! Now you all know the real reason why they're hard to
see! Denise
