Dead birds
Meanwhile, authorities say it will take two days for test results to confirm
the cause of death of more than 100 white corellas in the east Perth suburb
of Bassendean.
The Department of Environmental Protection has called on Agriculture Western
Australia to test seed found in the birds stomachs to determine if the birds
were poisoned.
It was thought they may have died as a result of last week's chemical fire
at a hazardous waste solutions plant in nearby Bellevue.
The EPA's chief executive officer, Bryan Jenkins, says the department is
investigating a possible link, but as no other birds in the area were
affected it is more likely to be poisoning.
"The evidence would suggest that it's unlikely [that they were killed by the
chemical fire]," he said.
"We've taken some birds for sampling it's indicated that they have lupin
seeds in their stomachs and the death probably occurred on Sunday rather
than on the Thursday evening.
"It would appear to be another cause but as a precaution we're taking
analysis to determine whether there was any relationship between the two."
