I recently completed a rather casual 7 hour birding "day" at Werribee and then
You Yangs with a friend. We were interested in the fact that we were able to
tally 96 species in that time and began thinking of a big day (24hour) around
Melbourne and what species total would be possible. Of course we are keen to
break 100 but it seems that far more would be possible. I would suspect that
130+ wouldn't be unreasonable given some indication as to some other locations.
I would be interested in hearing from you with your suggestions on where to
head after visiting Werribee and You Yangs. Would it be worth continuing to
head west toward Geelong, north into a different biome, or into the eastern
suburbs where there are seemingly reasonable chances of Powerful Owl (i.e
recent and former postings from Blackburn lake), realising that this is but one
species.
I'm realising that this kind of "sport" is not for everyone but it does spice
things up and we are both definitely keen as we have never done a minor or
major twitchathon in Australia. Also, keeping later on in the year (October)
in mind for fundraising.
And so ... please, if you are remotely interested in our mini quest ... please
give us some guidance. Particularly lacking on where to go from Werribee and
You Yangs and where we should aim our nocturnal efforts.
Looking to do it at the end of Feb or at the latest early march before we start
losing some species north bound.
