Hi Paul
I looked up my trusty : "The Illustrated Dictionary of Australian
Birds by Common name" by J.D. Macdonald [c.1987] which gives the following:
"Bobtail - Popular name, quoted by Neville Cayley; refers to
very short tail typical of all pittas."
The Noisy Pitta has a number of other names including:
Buff-breasted Pitta
Dragoon-bird - quoted by North
