Penguin found in Vic backyard

A penguin is happily ensconced in police care after
being found in a backyard in Victoria.

The Preston household called police when they
found the one-foot-tall, slightly malting penguin in
their backyard at about 2:30am AEDT this morning.

They have no idea how the it got there.

Meantime, the young penguin will wait its cell until
an expert arrives to collect it.

Is anyone able to find out what it is? Probably a Little Penguin is the size
estimate is correct.

Sorry if you've already seen this on the TV news over the last couple of days - but nobody else has replied, so ....

Yes, it was a Little Penguin. Zoo staff are keeping for a couple of weeks until it has completed its molt and has enough feathers to head off into cold waters again.

The police seem to think that it was captured near one of the local colonies (they are all around Port Phillip - not just at the 'Penguin Parade' on Phillip Island) and dumped - perhaps as a prank?

Does anyone at the zoo or in DNRE have more info on the condition of the bird and its source?
