To just expand on what Dion said about Brolgas, they are listed as
Vulnerable under the Threatened Species Conservation (TSC) Act. This means
that they may become endangered if the current threats continue (I would be
very surprised if populations are increasing though in certain areas they
are regularly recorded).
A comment on the Bowerbird issue. When QNPWS was quoted saying the Golden
Bowerbird is a 'common' bird they were legally correct. Neither the Golden
or Tooth-billed Bowerbird is listed on the Federal (Environment Protection
and Biodiversity Conservation) or Queensland (Nature Conservation Act)
threatened species lists. The legal definition of a common bird is "A bird
indigenous to Australia (other than a presumed extinct, endangered,
vulnerable or rare bird)" so what they said is technically true.
This surprises me a bit, particularly for the Qld list. If these birds are
as restricted as seems to be coming from the response from FNQ, maybe some
lobbying should be done to add these species to list (sorry don't know who
exactly should be contacted - in NSW we have a Scientific Commitee that adds
species to the list).
