In January 1996, I went to Shark Bay in Western Australia with two friends from Queensland. The day was 47 degrees plus with about 30 knot plus hot dry easterly winds. We stopped at the bridge over the Murchison River. We found a number of species just sitting on the ground in shade near the waters edge. These species included Mistletoebird, Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater and Rufous Whistler.

As we went from the Overlander Roadhouse to Denham we stopped a few times and found several species in the dust at the base of the mulga trees. These species included Hooded Robin and Varied Sittella.

The next day we were heading back to Carnarvon, and we stopped for lunch at the Hamelin Pool Caravan Park. The temperature was still 45 degrees plus although the wind had dropped a fair bit. It the shade near a sprinkler we found several species on the ground. These species included Black-eared Cuckoo, Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater and White-plumed Honeyeater.

We also stopped at Carbla Bore. We found some more birds on the ground. These included Mulga Parrot and Hooded Robin.
