On 30 December I observed a pair of King Parrots feeding on fruit of
Dodonea viscosa (Family Sapindaceae and native to much of drier
Australia and indeed well beyond) in our back yard in Turner. (This is
inner suburban Canberra for those not familiar with local geography). We
don't often see King Parrots at our place in summer.
They were perching on the small shrub, which is fruiting for the first
time, and apparently selecting the green fruit. At present the winged
dry fruit are just starting to turn red. HANZAAB lists five members of
the family as known food sources, but these are all rainforest trees. No
Dodonea is listed.
Anyway, just a small thing, but I guess it's all part of the big
picture!
