Batemans Bay Pelagic Trip Report  19 November,  2000

Batemans Bay, NSW  35 43S, 150 10E

Those on board: Eric Andrew, David Webb, Allan Cowan, Geoff Duggan, Graeme
Clarke, Nicola Clarke, Bill Hetherington, Barbara Allan, Terry Hunt,
Margaret Hunt, Brian Cant.

Vessel: Jeanne Marie. Skipper: Grant Innes. Owner: Pleasurelea Resort.

Weather: Fine; overcast initially, clearing later. Air temperature 24C,
water temperature 18C; sea calm with light breeze.

Activity: Departed 0800, returned 1400. Heading SE at 18 knots with short
pause, crossed shelf-break at 0930, berleying at 35.46.46S, 150.36.34E in
200
fathoms. Then moved NE to join trawler and berleyed again, before going to
800 fathoms. Headed in at 1230. Berley was shark liver.

Birds: (numbers in brackets = highest count at any one time). Scarce all
over. Small groups of shearwaters inshore. Most activity over shelf. Total
of 13 species.

Wandering Albatross 7 (6) all stage 4-5; pelagic
Black-browed Albatross 6 (4) all sub adult; pelagic
Great-winged Petrel 100 (40) mainly P M Gouldi; pelagic
TAHITI PETREL1 stayed only long enough to enable identification; pelagic
Short-tailed Shearwater 250 (30) in small groups mainly inshore
Wedge-tailed Shearwater 25; pelagic
Sooty Shearwater 3; pelagic
Wilsons Storm Petrel 1; pelagic
Pomarine Jaeger 1; pelagic
Sooty Tern 1; pelagic
Crested Tern 2; pelagic
Australasian Gannet 2 (2); inshore
Little Penguin 3 (2); inshore

Extras: 2 Sunfish, 1 Flying Fish, 6 Common Dolphin, 3 Risso's Dolphin
