Remember of course that even if similar numbers of birds have been observed beachcast in previous years, the population could have been larger then, and so a greater proportion of the population could be dying at the moment (or equally the population might be larger now, and this year represent a proportionally smaller mortality).

Life wasn't meant to be simple.
