I agree with Andrew Stafford
It's hard to remember what's gonna get us next! Global warming caused by
the Greenhouse effect or is it the Ice Age coming, not to mention the ever
growing hole in the Ozone layer and sea levels rising!
Maybe its time to establish an honesty audit on all this crisis research,
just to be sure there is a benchmark standard being adhered to, for example,
lets make sure that all the sea level measuring poles are not sinking into
the mud. Or that the global warming measurement devices are not
conveniently located in the concrete car park near the air conditioning
outlet next door to the researchers ivory tower. Its been rumoured that
three of every five global warming measurement devices are in artificially
warm locations and that the other two havn't shown any warming YET.
Have you ever wondered who are the beneficiaries when a new environmental
crisis is reported? How far down the ladder of Government funding would
sit a frog researcher, if it wasn't for the convenience of the Global
Warming Theory? Are frogs really a better environmental indicator than
most other animals and plants, or is it merely that frogs are objects
represented by a cunning group of researchers that have conspired to con the
pollies and the public for their own ends.
Did you know that the White-backed Swallow and Red-backed Kingfisher are
indicators of desert erosion? Just imagine how much taxpayers money (other
peoples hard earned money) could be ripped out of the system if an
articulate researcher played with that one?

Speaking as a former journalist, birders should treat some of the more
disaster-prone reportage with real caution. The whole point of news and
current affairs is that it is, by definition, crisis-driven. If there is no
crisis, then one has to be invented or at least exaggerated. This is how it
works. So it is all too easy to focus on any amount of oil found in a birds'
stomach without considering other possible variables.
I ask birders to think more critically about the information they receive
before jumping on the crisis bandwagon. Why is it only Short-tailed
Shearwaters that have been affected? Allan Morris' explanation seems to me
by far the most likely, but it's also the least sexy from an editor's point
of view.
