Hi everyone,
had a day birdwatching (with Scott Chandry) at the You Yangs and
Werribee on Tuesday. I am not surprised that Werribee has been closed
as it was getting pretty tricky (esp near Paradise Rd mudflats) even for
the 4wd forester. That unfortunately will ruin some twitching plans.
Anyway we had a pretty good day despite the weather ranging from
shocking to appalling. The You Yangs were just in constant rain the
whole time we were there and at Werribee it was too wet and windy to use
the scopes out of the car.
However there were some highlights best of which was a single female
FRECKLED DUCK on the South side of Lake Borrie. Also large numbers of
BANDED STILTS, RED-NECKED AVOCETS and small numbers of BLACK-WINGED
STILTS on the T-section lagoons. (Given you can walk in there from the
main road on foot would that still be open?). Down at the spit there
were a few half breeding plumage probable GREY PLOVER (the distance was
very great and the weather too shocking to be 100% sure).
Near Lake Gherang we found SINGING BUSHLARK and had it in the scope for
great views of the shoulder color, also PALLID AND SHINING-BRONZE CUCKOO
and lots of WHITE-NECKED HERON.
At the You Yangs lots of OLIVE-BACKED ORIOLES, WHITE-WINGED TRILLER,
RUFOUS WHISTLER and smaller numbers of FAN-TAILED CUCKOO, SCARLET ROBIN
and EASTERN SPINEBILL.
Good Luck to all the twitchathon teams, unfortunately I'll be working.
Best Wishes
John Boyce
