Your implication that females prefer males without penises is definitely
for the birds.

Michael Hunter's comment set me thinking about an American email session
regarding male birds lining up to copulate with a female killed by a car!
And another in the National Times about some years ago about randy
mallards in parks, their numbers no longer killed off by the long flight
to Spain, raping other birds including a swan and an owl!

Whether female birds prefer males without a penis I don't know, but if
that holds then it may also be that at least some male birds don't care
what they have sex with! At least females go for something with a bit of
life in it and preferably of the same species!
