There is an article in the Summer 98-99 issue of Nature Australia on the
question of bird penises. On the cover there is a picture of a Major Mitchell
cockatoo, and the text "How birds do it". The article is called "Why
kissing is for the birds". A fertile field for double entendre.
It states that only 246 species worldwide have a penis, including cassowary, emu and all waterfowl. The discussion of why 97% do not has a distinctly gender-political air, suggesting that female preference may have led to the disappearance of this useful appendage. Interesting! Jenny
