With regard to the thread about arriving migrants, I heard my first
Olive-backed Oriole for the spring next to the Quarry Road bridge over the
Mullum Mullum Creek in Mitcham (about 25 km east of Melbourne CBD) on
Thursday 15 September. I was even more surprised to hear one this afternoon
in Glen Iris, next to Gardiners Creek, within about 10 km of the city.

One Saturday morning a flight of four Spoonbills flew over Glen Iris,
beating into what was then a northerly breeze (it shifted westerly and wet a
bit before midday). On Sunday three Ibis flew over my home at Glen
Waverley, recognisable as such by the bills but looking to be all dark,
including the tails. Could these have been Glossy Ibis? If so, why
couldn't they have waited a couple of weeks, for the Twitchathon, when they
would have been appreciated even more??

I did a bit of a recce last Sunday week out to the Banyule wetlands (about
15 km north-east of the city) and picked up 47 species in a bit under an
hour, including a pair of White-necked Herons, Fan-tailed and Horsfield
Bronze- Cuckoos and my first Victorian sighting of Scaly-breasted Lorikeets.
No snipe yet, but hopefully by Sunday week...

Regards to all,

    Jack Krohn
