G'day all
I had the good fortune with some friends this morning to get really good
views of Spotless Crake, Baillon's Crake and Buff-banded Rail all in the
same area on one of the lagoons at Sherwood Forest Park (UBD map ref K18,
page 178). Since it has been dry for a while, the lower water level has
exposed more mud-banks where these birds can be observed foraging.
If you're thinking of going there, early morning may be the best (we were
there from 7am to 8.30am). The exact location is as follows: walk west (ie
heading away from the main park area and towards the houses) along the
pathway that bisects the two lagoons. On the right-hand side, not far from
the pathway junction, the birds were observed foraging near the edge of the
water that surrounds the island.
Among other birds identified while we were there, were many Clamorous
Reed-Warblers, Little Lorikeets, nesting White-breasted Woodswallows, and
Nankeen Night Herons.
What better way to start a Sunday morning!
