One of the major problems with trying to send formatted text over the
net is the confusion between fixed and variable spaced fonts.  For
example, your email program may display a variable spaced when you are
composing, but use a fixed space font when reading.  One of the
characters most affected is the "space" character.

My suggestion is to use a fixed space font when composing [that way you
can also ensure you don't exceed 80 characters per line] and tell
everyone what font you've used.  [No guarantees it won't come out
garbelled on someone's computer though].
