I noticed Michael Hunter's note re Lloyd Nielsen's book - "Birds of
Queensland's Wet Tropics and Great Barrier Reef".
Indeed Lloyd pioneered his unique identification system in his first
field guide "Birds of Lamington National Park and Environs". A quiet
achiever, Lloyd told me he based his idea around the needs of
birdwatchers - from beginners to the more experienced. He had been
guiding at O'Reilly's (in Lamington National Park, southern Qld.) for a
few years, and birdwatchers would invariably ask "What is that small
bird with the yellow breast?" etc. In other words, they wanted to base
their identification on the obvious visual appearance of each bird they
I understand that Lloyd's format has been well received by local,
interstate and international birdwatchers.
