To confirm the arrival of cuckoos in the Melbourne area, last week the
first fan-tailed cuckoos had reached Lysterfield NP, some 40 kms on the
eastern side of the city.

In July I participated in some Remote Area Atlassing in the Great
Victoria Desert with Geoff Walker, Ken Harris, Keith Johnson and other
birders. As we crossed the desert from west to east we encountered
pockets of cuckoos, first pallid, then horsfield's and finally
black-eared. Each species would be sighted in every survey for a day or
two, then absent itself. Then one of the other cuckoos would be common
for a day or so. The cuckoos were moving through as much as we were.

While the analysis of data from the trip is not yet complete [a trip
report will follow soon] pallid cuckoos were the most frequently
reported in the surveys overall.
