A band sighting has been reported to me, as follows
Laughing Kookaburra Frenchs Forest CSIRO band no. 975627 - metal
Also this bird and another with a metal band stating "Wildlife" were noted
in the last 2 weeks by Lindsay Aked of Frenchs Forest, Sydney, behaving in
a very strange manner.
The first time he noticed this, only the CSIRO banded bird was sitting on a
fence post staring up at the sky. He approached the bird, it didn't move.
He talked to it. No movement. He approached very close. No movement. He
touched it, just its eyes moved towards him a bit but then it continued to
stare at the sky. He could see nothing at which it might be staring . He
had to push the bird before it flew away.
A few days later there were the two birds sitting on a fence post. Exactly
the same behaviour as before. And nothing going on around the area which he
could see would be causing them to stare skywards, bills pointing sharply
up.
The local kookaburras are well used to people and get fed occasionally but
this seemed to Lindsay to be exceptionally strange behaviour - he would
have easily picked the birds up. A push was needed to get them to fly - he
thought they were in some sort of catatonic state.
Has anyone noticed this sort of behaviour before - can anyone suggest an
explanation for it?
