Anthea - what a fascinating account of the Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo at lunch ... but, you didn't mention which hand it was using when feeding.  Did you note this? Did it use beak only to strip away the torn wood, or was a foot used for this work also?
 
Our local Glossy Black-Cockatoos (near Dubbo, in central western NSW) seem to be exclusively left-footed.
