Recently I have found it much more difficult to locate Blue-faced Parrot-Finches on the southern Atherton Tablelands, where they are common locally all year.
This is coincident with a policy (by the Wet Tropics Management Authority ??) of spraying herbicide on roadside grasses.  In particular, the favoured Guinea Grass Panicum maximum has been killed over many kilometres.
The paucity of finches may simply result from habitat loss.
I would like to contact toxicologists that know whether sprayed seed could have deleterious effects upon granivores.  Presumably the chemical used would be "Roundup" or its equivalent.
