Hi All,
Just had a report from Colin Rogers and Roly Lloyd who have just done a
very quick trip (10/7 - 15/7) up the Birdsville track as far as Koonchera
Dune and waterhole.
The waterhole currently has thousands of ducks estimated as ca 2000 Plumed
Whistling Ducks, and thousands of most other types including Musk, Pacific
Black, Grey Teal, Pink-eared, and Hardhead. There were no Chestnut Teal but
there was one Freckled Duck in full breeding. There were also hundreds of
Black Swans and an estimated 5 - 10,000 Glossy Ibis.
At the dune itself they found the Eyrean and Grey Grasswrens and Cinnamon
Quail-thrush. Whilst staking out the Eyreans on the top of the dune a pair
of Blue-winged Parrots flew overhead, this being at the northern extremity
of their range.
Pandiburra Bore drain produced two male Yellow Chats, ca 70 Aust
Pratincoles, together with Banded Lapwings and Orange Chats, and at the
turnoff to Pandiburra Stockyard they found a Gibber Chat nesting with two
chicks.
Further south at Damperannie Creek Spotted Harriers were breeding, as were
Pied and Black Honeyeaters.
Just west of Mungerannie Roadhouse (27 56 47s, 138 34 32e )they found a
couple of Banded Whiteface, and along Cowrie Rd there were Singing
Bushlarks, and Brown and Rufous Songlarks.
South of Farina Pied honeyeaters were breeding in great numbers in every
available soak supporting Eremophilas.
Down at Mt Lyndhurst (Strz track) they found four Chestnut-breated
Whitefaces, 2 Redthroats and more Pied Honeyeaters, but no Thick-billed
grasswrens.
The Short-tailed Grasswrens were found near Stokes Hill Lookout on Willow
Springs Stn, and there were many Redthroats opposite the Death Rock turnoff.
Atlas reports are being produced.
