Bowen Birding Weekend 10-12 June 2000

Come to Bowen for the Queens Birthday weekend and enjoy a relaxing weekend
of birding.

It is now a number of years since TRBOCA and MACBOCA's last visit to the
Climate Capital of Australia so it is well worth your while to come and
visit and catch up on some of those dry tropic species.

Kaili Swamp at Abbot Point has been alive with waterbirds for the most part
of this year and provides opportunities for you to observe nesting birds,
young birds and juvenile birds. With all this activity the Wedge-tailed
Eagles and other birds of prey have become regulars.

The Bowen Saltworks will be very quiet at the present time with the great
majority of them now departed to the breeding grounds. Mangrove sites are
close at hand around Bowen and provide good search areas especially at first
light. Remember the Aeroguard but!

With much of the grass in the district seeding numerous Finches are now
present especially at Merinda where we have had up to five species in the
one morning.

Atlassing is being conducted in our area so feel free to bring your GPS etc
and conduct some counts.

Accommodation.

Rod 'n Reel Ph 4786 2421 or Whitsunday Sands Resort Ph 4786 3388

Horseshoe Bay Resort is under new management with quite a deal of
renovations being undertaken since your last visit. They have various types
of accommodation available from van sites to family units with a fantastic
little restaurant on the beachfront that provides excellent meals and is
licensed. Contact Kerry on Ph 4786 2564 for prices and don't forget to ask
for the special Birders rate.

All of the above a central to Horseshoe Bay and area that also offers
camping sites.
