Ten people, including visitors turned up for the monthly field outing
Sunday 4th June to Landings Road near Koumala.
A beautiful fine winter's day in the tropics with the 8.00 am
temperature around 16 degrees.
6 Kilometers down the road we stopped to see a flock of 20 to 30
Chestnut-breasted Mannikins. About half of these were juveniles but one
in particular took our attention because of a white patch of feathers on
it's back. None of us had ever seen a mannikin with this mark before.
Presumably it will vanish with adult plumage.
Probably because of all the rain we have had this year dispersing the
birds, the wetlands did not live up to previous visits with regards to
the number of species, but combined with the surrounding bushland the
tally was 75 bird species for the area.
Best birds were Australasian Shovelers, Bar-breasted Honeyeaters,
Mangrove Robins, and Variegated Fairy-wrens which are very uncommon in
our district.
Birds aside, the day's highlight was a 14ft croc. basking in the sun !
