Dear all,
In my field guides Koels are supposed to migrate back to PNG about march. But because of the warmer weather (I think it is actually quite cold but my parents tell me otherwise...) could there be still Koels around? My mother tells me yesturday that she saw this bird, in a eucalypt out in our back yard, with a yellow (perhaps shiny) belly, black head, and mottled back. (I've been training her in how to observe a bird for I was getting sick of "It was either brown or black and I think it was bigger than a sparrow..." -and expecting me to identify it!)It was it's loud squarking call that attracted her to it, she tells me. After searching through the guides I think it is most likely a female Common Koel. (This making me very jealous for I have never seen a female Koel before!) Any further suggestions? I must say though since I have taught my family to observe that birds and help them identify some they are appericiating our birds much more.
Regards
Rachelle
