A Quick check of the Cairns Esplanade on Saturday 22nd April found a few
interesting birds. A sub
adult Black-necked Stork was out in the surf and there were 3 Beach
Stone-curlews present. They
looked like a pair which had bred on the Cairns airport with the juvenile bird
which is now 4 months
old. There were a few waders still around, 12 Bar-tailed Godwits, 11 Whimbrel,
21 Eastern Curlew,
69 Grey-tailed Tattlers, 95 great Knot and no small waders at all and still 4
Australian Pelicans
hanging around. There were 10 Red-necked Stints, 6 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers and
1 Curlew Sandpiper at
Cairns airport on the same day. Red-capped Plovers were also at the airport
with at least 18,
several pairs also had very young chicks.
Two Little Kingfishers have been reported on Redden Island by Redden Creek
(north of Cairns Airport,
accessible by road bridge) along with a Great-billed Heron on the opposite side
of the island on the
Barron River.
Further afield on Mt.Lewis at the back of Kingfisher Park, Julatten over the
Easter break we saw a
couple of Blue-faced Parrot Finches less than 1k from the bottom and others had
seen up to 5 in the
same spot. Also in this area was White-eared Monarch and Pied Monarchs. There
was no sign of the
BFPF higher up at the usual spot - the clearing at the 10k mark on the road.
There was Russet-tailed
Thrushes, lots of Chowchillers with young and a Yellow-faced Honeyeater, which
was the first we had
seen here in 12 years of visits, this was at a height of over 950m.
The rain has set in again with another 177mm falling in the last few days
taking the years total to
over 2500mm!
