I too like the idea of using taxes (and remember that Australia
is heavily under-taxed in terms of carbon taxes) to help with
conservation of farming land.

But there also needs to be a system of assessing the value of
doing this.  Some people are working marginal land which would
be better used for conservation rather than food production.
Taxes should also pay for the increase in GDP which would result
in paying people to leave the land rather than hang on and
damage land which would yield more environmental and fiscal
benefits by being withdrawn totally from production.
