Yesterday East Dubbo was swarming with Swifts. At about 18:15 I had to duck
out to run an errand. A handful of White-throated Needetails were zooming
overhead, I estimated about 20. Driving around the corner the numbers
increased until after about 1.5 kilometres I estimated that the numbers were
up to about 300 birds. There were almost certainly more birds further to
the west and south. The birds were actively feeding on insects just above
tree height in this suburban area, ie about 10-20 metres.
The weather was clearing and still after two days of rain.
The last swifts I saw at East Dubbo was on 6 February when I saw a sole
Fork-tailed Swift about 14:00 and then about 50 White-throated Needletail at
18:00. The Fork-tail was seen several hours before rain started falling.
