Where has the Hooded Plover been removed from the ENDANGERED status?
Australia or Victoria. If Australia, then this is probably because of work
that has counted numbers up to 1500 at Lake Gore near Esperance in WA. I
found that it was fairly common on Tasmanian beaches. So it might be
difficult to justify that it is endangered NATIONALLY. This is the same as
for the Little Tern which can be abundant along the Kimberley coast.
However, this does not mean that STATE bodies cannot regard the species as
endangered. From everything that I have read, I would expect that Hooded
Plover is still regarded as endangered in Victoria. It is just as
important to maintain diversity across the states to maintain separate
populations, but this is a state responsibility. The WA population spends
a lot of its time away from the coast on salt lakes, while I understand
that this is uncommon in the SE of Australia? So keep up the work to
monitor and preserve the breeding success in Victoria.
