Actually it say "more than 1000 varieties" which seems a reasonable
statement of the number of subspecies  - I believe Schodde and Mason list
over 700 passerine subspecies.  Criticism of a poorly-written foreword
seems pretty trivial to me and the 12 projects covered in the brochure
sound great.

Having said that, the brochure does nothing to reassure me about
the serious concerns raised about the NHT, see:

Most of the 12 projects mentioned in the prochure mainly concern
endangered species (which is great) but according to the SMH piece
only 21 of ~1500 NHT projects  are endangered species projects which is
very worrying.
