On the NSW FOC Central Coast outing last Saturday, 29 Jan, an earlier
limited sighting of a Black Bittern by a few members turned into a gala
event later in the day when we returned, optimistically, to the same
place for another look. The bird obligingly appeared from behind a
moored boat and proceeded to stalk slowly down the other side of
Ourimbah Creek in full view of everyone. After maybe ten minutes it
took flight and flew about 100m down the river before landing and
disappearing from view.

We were at the little reserve at Sunshine Avenue off Geoffrey Road,
Chittaway Point and the bird was on the south side of the river opposite
the wharf.

Other highlights included Southern Emu Wrens, a Bar-shouldered Dove and
a Peregrine near Tuggerah Wharf. The Sewerage Treatment Works at
Tuggerah produced, in addition to the usual waterbirds, 4 Pink-eared
Ducks, a Hoary-headed Grebe, a pale morph Little Eagle, a Collared
Sparrowhawk and a Swamp Harrier.

Cheers, Ian
