Reg Clarke on 27/01/1900 referred to my visitors book at a birding spot.
About 1-1/2 years ago I placed a visitors' book in a steel toolbox (adjacent
to a previously built rock cairn) at a Carpentarian Grass-wren site near
Mount Isa.
At the front of the book is
-- a warning to carry a compass, especially if searching on the west side of
the road.
(In the middle of the day when sun overhead & no shadows I have needed
to use it twice)
-- lat. & long. and distance from the Isa
-- an area mud map (which visitors are asked to mark up with locations of
any sightings)
-- advice to walk quietly, slowly and in small groups.
-- photocopies from QOSI (Qld Ornithological Society Inc) "Sunbird" of
papers about the first sightings in the area.
-- photocopy of an article in Australian Birding Magazine by Chris Lester
-- a bird list for the CGW area
-- a note to look for a fat tailed mouse like creature.
-- some lined paper for visitors to write comments especially regarding the
birds habits
I have been surprised at the number of overseas visitors who have left a
kind note regarding the book at this remote location.
On one occasion 3 birdo's cars (travelling independently) were there at the
one time.
I have blocked access to the old mining exploration tracks with logs and
rocks after I found vehicle tracks of at least 2 vehicles in the spinifex
where I have seen the bird. These birds are generally very timid and any
noise or sudden movement is enough to send them scurrying for cover.
The book contains 20 plastic pockets. I retrieve any new pages from the
book every few months and replace as soon as possible with photostats.
Some valuable info on the habits of this lovely, little, rare,remote
location bird is now starting to emerge from these notes.
