Chris
I was waiting for someone to put a little commonsense and Departmental
knowledge into the Painted Button-Quail discussion. It is difficult to
put the tag on "Aviary escapee" when a bird is a known possibility in or
near the particular area, especially a nomadic species. A Princess
Parrot in Melbourne, on the other hand would be. When I was an
aviculturist in a "past life" in Ballarat, aviary escapees were often
mentioned at the ASA meetings. I, in fact, let go a Northern Rosella
one day when I was feeding them. Dad was impressed as he had only had
it for a couple of months. I believe that it mated up with a Eastern
Rosella and was seen for a couple of years after, offspring???
DNR data bank of wildlife permits would be a good place to look if
anyone is after captivity data for Aust. birds. This database should
have records for about 15 - 20 years based on quarterly returns by
wildlife fanciers.
