Now these birds looked almost like females or immatures, they were

Overall grey/brown plumage. Any suggestions?

Your unknowns just MIGHT be immature Starlings - which have often
puzzled me severely. The first plumage is a very indeterminate
fawnish-greyish colour. When the spotty adult plumage comes in (during
it does so patchily, starting on flanks and sometimes breast. At this
bird can be mistaken for lots of things, and I doubt if it's illustrated
anywhere. It's almost as puzzling as a young Golden Whistler!
