Fellow birders,
I was in Tasmania last week on a cycling trip, and spent our rest day in
Hobart. As I didn't expect to see any interesting birds, I didn't have my
binocs with me. However I noticed large numbers of shearwaters flying in
the Derwent offshore from the main city area of Hobart. Can anyone
enlighten me as to what species these might have been? (I'm guessing either
Short-tailed or Sooty Shearwaters).
Incidentally I didn't see a great number of birds on the trip. During the
times when we were cycling through forest, I heard quite a few birds but
couldn't easily stop and search them out (I need to improve my "birding by
ear"), and most of the places we camped didn't have any decent birding
spots around. The exception was Port Arthur, but the weather was foul while
we were there (rain, hail and wind). I did see a few of the Tasmanian
endemics - Tasmanian Native-hen, Green Rosella, Yellow Wattlebird, Black
Currawong, also both Pacific and Kelp Gulls and the above-mentioned
shearwaters, but not a lot else.
Cheers,
Koren
