Hi all,
For those still seeking the Hudsonian Godwit (at the Western Treatment Plant
near Melbourne) further to Roger McGovern's message here's a few more
detailed directions as the bird is moving about a bit. The bird was again
present between 1000 and 1130 yesterday at Austin Rd Lagoons but was located
on different ponds to previous sightings. I understand it was originally
located on the largest pond in the AR Lagoons: park just before the first
big sweeping bend in the Rd to Pt Wilson hop over the fence on the right and
walk down the track ~200 m and it's the pond to the south (also has lots of
Shelduck etc). More recently including yesterday it was seen on two
different ponds 300-400 m further to the south. To get to these go around
the first sweeping bend in the Pt Wilson Rd and just before the second
sweeping bend park on the roadside and hop over the fence on the right. The
larger pond mentioned above is to north and directly to the south is a
recently dry pond, walking around or across this dry pond will bring two
more shallow ponds into view. Both were covered in small waders yesterday at
high tide. The H Godwit was with five Black-tailed Godwit that were mixing
with a flock of Banded Stilt and Avocet. It would pay to cheek them all out.
Most sightings have occurred around high tide. The bird has also been seen
on the spit and associated lagoon at low tide but unlike Austin Rd Lagoons
access to the spit is restricted (even for permit holders).
Best of luck

Rohan
